“With constant touring also netting them a growing fan base, it was to no one’s surprise that Air France began 2009 as a hotly tipped act.” —

One more of my grandfather. Like the previous photo, this is from 1943 or 1944 in the South Pacific, scanned recently by my father. Crazy to see someone you only knew as an adult looking so young.

Inspired by Mark’s post, here’s a photo of my grandfather in the South Pacific from 1943 or 1944.
This is my six-month-old son’s namesake, so he’s been on my mind a lot. My father has been scanning lots of old slides lately, and these were scanned in the past few months.
In January 1945, the plane my grandfather flew — a Douglas A-20G — was shot down. The other two men on the aircraft, a photographer and a gunner, died.
My wife recently uncovered the official accident report about the crash landing, which makes for fascinating reading. Filipino locals cared for my grandfather for 21 days before he was able to contact his superiors. The photographer chose to jump from the plane and was found dead in a rice paddy, his parachute partly open. The gunner stayed in the turret during the landing, probably thinking the photographer was in the crash position on the floor, and never regained consciousness.

Watch John Mayer Explain His Years of Douchebaggery
wherein (a) I got to use the term ‘douchebaggery’ in a headline, (b) I look forward to the day I’m allowed to use ‘fuckery abounds’ in a headline, and (c) John Mayer is still a douche, but wants you to know there USED to be “reasons” why. Still waiting for an explanation vis-à-vis that Raconteurs-cum-Depp hat, though.
Also, these are his “essentials,” BECAUSE EFFING OBVIOUSLY

“Nothing beats finding something special on your own and having that gestation time, like “I really got into this record this week,” and you give it to your friend or you make a mixtape. That stuff doesn’t have to go away. That doesn’t have to be replaced — it’s still there and it’s always going to be the most awesome.” — Interview: Beach House | eMusic News & Features

“Obviously, I am a teenage girl here. I am gonna read into every single thing that you say. And I am going to take it to heart, because that is who I am. I am full of hormones and I can’t help it. But like, Earl Sweatshirt has been like my rap idol ever since I first heard him years ago. When I heard that, why couldn’t it have been Tyler? Why couldn’t it have been anybody but Earl? I mean, come on. That kind of stung.” —
